How to Write Report text

Report text is a type of text that describes the shape, characteristics or properties of public (general) objects, animals, plants, people or events. The purpose of the social function of report text is to provide information or a picture of the general characteristics of objects, animals, plants, or humans. Lexico grammatical of Report text usually use simple present tense, linking verb, passive form and so on.

Report text has generic structure as follows:
1. General classification

Introducing objects, animals, plants, or someone that will be discussed. One way is to create a definition or classification.
2. Description

Tell the parts, qualities, properties, behavior objects, animals, plants, or a person described.

            Report texts which describe things in general. It's a little bit different from descriptive text which describe specific thing because Report text has a shape similar to the descriptive text. Students typically have difficulty distinguishing between the two types of text. However, they can be distinguished easily from the object which is discussed.

A report text commonly describes things in general while descriptive text tends to explain the characterization of a specific thing. The most fundamental difference in the two types of this text is as follows.

Report text has a generic structure as follows:

Descriptive text gives a description of something special or specific, while the report provides a description of the general features of an object type of life or death.

How to write Report text, that is because report text contains the class or subclass of the topic described, and then followed by telling the shape, parts, behavior, in details. You would never describe anything, can include animals, plants, objects, and other things in general.

A concrete example if there are foreign tourists who asks you to explain about the characteristics of Indonesia, you will surely describe the Indonesian people in general not describe unto yourselves of course. Or in a Biology lesson, you usually learn the characteristics of animals in general; whether it's class (classification) to study the properties of these animals in detail (description). In Indonesian we know the text of the description. However, in the English text of the description is divided into two parts, namely descriptive and report. The thing to remember is the Report is the kind of text that describes something in general. Descriptive differences with describing anything specific or particular. Example: There are two texts on a computer that is “Computer” and “My Own Computer”, judging from the title the two texts are different types of texts: Computer (General; text type report); my own computer (Special, it’s just my computer, so Descriptive text type).

                                                Football Play

Football is a game played by two teams of eleven. They try to score by kicking or heading the ball into the other team’s goal. Ten of the players cannot use their hands. The goal keeper can handle the ball to stop it going into the goal.

Games similar to football have been played for many centuries. The rules of the games were written down in 1863. In England, the FA (Football Association) cup was first played for in 1872. In the same year, England played Scotland in the first game.
           Today the most important International Competition is the World Cup which takes place in every four years. Brazil and Italy have each won the world cup three times.

Another example:

Dolphins

For many years, many people believed that the cleverest animals after man were the resource persons the chimpanzees. Now, however, there is proof that Dolphins may be even cleverer than these big apes.
            Although a dolphin lives in the sea it is not a fish. It is a mammal. It is in many Airways, therefore, like a human being.

Dolphins have a simple language. They are Able to talk to one another. It may be possible for man to learn how to talk to the Dolphins. But this will not be easy because the Dolphins cannot hear the kind of sounds man can make. If man wants to talk to the Dolphins, therefore, he Will have to make-a third language both which he and the Dolphins can understand.
              Dolphins are also very friendly toward man. Often they follow ships. There are many stories about Dolphins guiding ships through Difficult and dangerous water.
Analyses:

-          Text above describes the dolphin in general.

-          In the second paragraph stated clearly that the dolphin belongs to a mammal. It explains that Dolphin belong to a class of mammals.

-          In the third paragraph and further describes the habits of the common dolphin.

Another example:

A razor

A razor is a tool found in which is nearly every bathroom. A Man who has thick hair on his face may have to shave twice a day. It is a habit which can be dangerous. For many years, a razor was a handle with a long piece of steel which was sharp and flat at one end. These razors had a long open blade.

But today's razors are safer and more convenient to use. The thing which makes today's razor safe is that the blade is small thin sharp piece of steel. The person who invented razor blades was a man called King Gillette. He was a clever man who had many ideas for new Inventions. He wanted to make-a blade that was safe and which could be used Several times. In 1891, he invented a new type of razor blade.

It was short and it was held in a special handle. The sharp edge of the blade did not stick out very far. It was a razor which was safe to use. It was more difficult to cut yourself than with the older type of razor.
             Gillette's razor blade became popular. It was an invention which worked well and everybody need because each blade only lasted 8 to 10 times. Gillette sold many of his new safety blades and soon became a millionaire.
Analyses:

-          The text above is told about an inanimate object that is razor.

-          At the beginning paragraphs describe an apparatus in the form of razor in general.

-          In the next paragraph describes the parts and the shape of the razor.

It's clear that both of the texts above describe Things in general.

Report text we usually find in scientific books, especially science.
