B. Public Speaking Techniques

Public speaking is the art of speaking to a group of people in a structured manner intended to inform, influence or entertain the audience. Most careers will require that you give presentations or deliver speeches. But for many people, public speaking is at best a chore marked by great anxiety and at worst a potential career stopper. Speaking in public is one of the most feared activities. Public speaking can be a downright terrifying experience, and few have the training and confidence required to overcome the fear of public speaking and connect with an audience. The reluctance to get up in front of an audience is often a major impediment to career advancement. Mastering the art of public speaking will boost your confidence and give you a competitive edge.

The following public speaking tips will help you learn about the common causes of speaking anxiety and overcome stage fright. The articles herein provide information on public speaking techniques to help in overcoming fear of public speaking, acquiring confident speaking skills and improving your presentation skills. Readers will learn techniques to develop confidence, express ideas with authority, and communicate with charisma to influence and win over an audience.

The importance of mastering public speaking techniques to address audiences effectively and powerfully has been an issue since the beginnings of recorded history. The Bible's Old Testament makes no bones about the fact that the most influential prophets and leaders were those who could sway their audiences verbally. Throughout history, oratory skills have repeatedly proved to the decisive factor that turns the tide of public opinion. The Powerful oratory skills of many leaders have won wars, averted mass panic and saved companies from financial disaster.

Successful public speaking involves more than just choosing the right words (though this is certainly an important factor). Effective public speaking techniques includ establishing a rapport and relationship with the audience in many different ways.

Most of us have to overcome an initial fear of speaking in public (technically known as 'glossophobia' or 'stage fright). When an audience senses this fear in a speaker, it tends to shut him or her out for that reason alone. Fear of public speaking has visible manifestations that any audience can pick up immediately.

These are reactions to public speaking that each of us experiences to begin with. Overcoming them is a matter of practice and rising confidence levels. There is no shortcut or easier, softer option. In mastering public speaking techniques, we must stand a trial by fire. It is very similar to learning to ride a horse or bicycle. If we fall off, we must immediately get on again.. Failing to face one's fears in the public speaking arena will reinforce the fear. The result could be a permanent aversion to public speaking.

The most effective public speakers make their audience comfortable in subtle, calculated ways. These ways soon become second nature as the public speaker's confidence levels rise. Among the most useful techniques is the use of humor. Cracking a joke - preferably at one's own expense - is a sure-fire means of warming up an audience. This is why orators who use humor are more effective than the serious, lecturing types.

Controlling one's voice is equally important. A public speaker must pitch his or her voice high enough to be clearly audible to everyone in the audience. At the same time, it should not be so high-pitched to irritate or aggravate the audience. Thanks to modern amplification technology, it is possible for us to address an audience in a conversational pitch of voice and still be audible. Using this technology effectively is, once again, a matter of experience.

Building a relationship with one's audience is very important. A lecturing style of public speaking does not include the audience as a participant. While lecturing is useful if the speaker must convey a lot of information in a limited period, it can also be incredibly boring to an audience. Involving one's audience by asking it questions, making it laugh and inviting any other kind of feedback numbers among the most effective public speaking techniques.

Some successful orators advocate unorthodox methods, such as speaking on a relatively empty stomach. Others even advise speakers not to empty their bladder before a speech, claiming that this maintains the necessary edge in the situation. Finally, we must all discover our own most suitable public speaking techniques. However, nothing beats practice and proper preparation before the event.

C. Nervousness and Public speaking

Most of us have felt the jitters when asked to address a crowd. While nervousness and public speaking go hand in hand, remedies for it are also equally simple. Here are some nervousness and public speaking tips that will help you to face the audience confidently.

It takes that extra something to be able to address a group of people. With every public performance, be it a recital or just simple public speaking, nervousness while public speaking is something that people experience side by side. Any forms of public performances, be it song recitals or even dance performances, may cause nervousness. Public speaking though, is not just a one-way performance, but involves interacting with the audience to keep up their interest levels. I am not just talking about the palpitations that one experiences when he has to make a public speech. That bit of anxiety is desirable and is what pushes us to give our best. What I am referring to, is about having cold feet and a feelings of dizziness when one even thinks of speaking to a crowd. Let's understand the causes of what many simply refer to as 'nervousness public speaking' and some nervousness public speaking tips to overcome the drawback.

Nervousness and Public Speaking – Causes

Some unpleasant childhood experiences are what have been found to be one of the main reasons for nervousness during public speaking. One wrong pronunciation, one lapse of memory and the whole class may laugh at you. The teacher may scold you so that you don't repeat the mistake. But any one of such instances may leave an indelible impression in a child's mind, that scars his confidence for speaking in public for a lifetime.
Other than this, there is the fear of rejection and self consciousness. Am I looking wise? Am I talking smart? Would my point be accepted? What if I am criticized in front of everyone? These thoughts often plague one when he is required to make a public speech. After all no one wants to cut a sorry image of oneself in front of an audience.
Well while there are inherent factors that relate nervousness and public speaking, there is another aspect that goes a long way in making great public speakers out of average men. That factor is PRACTICE. Rehearsing one's speech using public speaking techniques goes a long way in making one an impressive public speaker. Read more on public speaking exercises

.
Know Your Subject

In case you are starting off with public speaking as a practice to overcome nervousness during public speaking, choose a topic that you have good knowledge on. Once you know that what you would speaking at the event is correct, half your fear of public speaking would be gone

.Prepare a Researched Speech

One of the best ways of performing well in public speaking and coping with the nervousness associated with it, is to prepare a well researched speech. In case the topic does not belong to your area of expertise, do not despair. Internet and libraries are excellent repositories of information on almost any subject. Familiarize yourself with the various aspects of the topic and prepare for all the probable questions that the audience may have regarding your speech.

It's a Mind Game and You are the Winner

The key to overcoming the fear of public speaking is to understand that the hurdle is more in the mind of the speaker than it actually is. The audience there does not expect you to come out with brilliant ideas like Einstein's Theory of Relativity. Some useful suggestions would definitely be expected. Nevertheless you wouldn't be walked to the gallows if the audience did not agree with you. All that is expected of you is to give some relevant points that you must make to sound credible, using proper reason and logic.

Reach the Venue Well Before Time

Remember that what makes us more nervous is how we feel just before the speech than what happens once we are on the podium. Reach the venue well in advance. This is one of the most effective tips for public speaking nervousness control. Familiarize yourself with the surroundings. Talk to people around. Some of them may be the audience. This will help you relax before the event starts and you would realize that like I said earlier, the audience does not expect a revelation from you. Remember that more than what one speaks, it is how one speaks it that sets the audience's reaction in one's favor.

Attend Public Speaking Events

This will help you in understanding what is required of a good public speaker. Observe the smart ones, how they speak, their body language and how they interact with the audience. You may think that the confidence that they exude is something that they were born with. But let me tell you my friend, it can be inculcated

.Practice, Practice, Practice

Having talked about inculcating confidence, what helps you in doing that? The magical word that helps in dealing with stage fright and overcoming nervousness during public speaking is PRACTICE. Practice in your college auditorium or in your office boardroom when it is unoccupied. You could also ask a friend to sit for audience and take his feedback on your performance. At home, look into the mirror and practice your speech. Observe your body language and make note of the aspects that need to be worked on.

Before Walking Up to the Stage

While you are sitting with the other speakers take deep breaths. Fresh supply of oxygen will soothe you and calm your nerves. In most cases, speakers sit facing the audience. Within the crowd there would always be a few friendly faces. Locate them and remember to look at them while you speak. If you are carrying your notes, attach the picture of your pet, your friend or your favorite cartoon character - whatever makes you smile and occasionally look at them.

When on Stage

If you are carrying your notes don't hold them in your hands once you walk over to the microphone. Also don't hold the microphone in your hand. In case your nerves haven't yet calmed and your hands are trembling, your notes or the microphone would betray your nervousness. One of the most effective public speaking tips is to start your speech with a tinge of humor. It could be a joke or a funny incident (could be fictitious, but you could pass it off as a true one). Try to maintain eye contact with the audience. This would quickly gain you audience's favor.
D. I’ve always been scared of speaking in front of people – but this technique really helped me

If you are facing a public speaking event or a presentation then I really hope you keep reading – so I can tell you about my experience with presenting and show you what I used to get over my fears.Throughout my entire lifetime I’ve naturally been pretty shy and quiet, especially when I’m around a group of people I’m not familiar with. I’ve read that it’s a pretty common feature in people and that almost everyone (except for extremely charismatic people) really suffer when they have to do presentations in front of live audiences.

This was extremely true for me. I remember during grade school and all through high school being terrified of making even the smallest presentations. I would never raise my hand in class and I absolutely despised even going up to the chalk board to spell a word or do a math problem. I was so overcome with fear that I can still remember the agony of just thinking about being laughed at or made fun of if I tripped or did the problem wrong.I always assumed that with practice, my fear of public speaking would get better and better – but that just wasn’t the case and during my years at college, it got worse.
E. Successful Public Speaking: Interact With Your Audience
Public speaking is a dialogue between you and your audience. Keep the dialogue from turning into a monologue by incorporating interaction into your presentation. It keeps your audience energized, engaged, and wanting to hear more; it puts the speaker in touch with the audience's interests and needs. Most of all, it creates a partnership between the audience and the speaker and fosters the perfect environment for mutual learning. The key to grabbing and keeping the attention of your attendees is to involve them – to make your presentation interactive. Your purpose may be to market your business, to persuade them to buy your product, to persuade them to save the world. But if you’re not involving them, paying attention to their needs and interests, you’re going to lose them, and they won’t come back.

Apart from sign language, speaking is the simplest, most natural and effective way of expressing ourselves. Speaking comes naturally to most of us, but 'public speaking' is an acquired skill. We speak in order to communicate with each other, with the intention of exchanging ideas, opinions, and feelings. But for some individuals, uttering even a simple request such as "Could you please direct me to the post office?", could prove to be a source of anxiety. For such people, speaking in front of a group of people could be quite difficult. While communicating with others, how confident the speaker is matters very much. The same is true for your kid.

Though kids are fearless and brave, they might need some tips and lots of support from you, when it comes to public speaking. You might want to start with a few activities that will develop your kid's public speaking skills. These activities will give your child a fair idea about public speaking, and some practical experience too. Given below are a few tips to help improve and sharpen your kid's public speaking skills.

F. Public Speaking for Kids

These activities will give your child a fair idea about public speaking, and some practical experience too. Given below are a few tips to help improve and sharpen your kid's public speaking skills.

Break the Ice:If your child is shy about speaking out or sharing his ideas, then this is a good exercise for him. Go to an open place with an uninterrupted view of the horizon. Ask your child what he thinks about the point, where the sky seems to be touching the earth. Listen carefully to what he says. Let his answer develop into a discussion. If you live in a city and it is difficult to find an uninterrupted view of the sky, or you're very busy and have no time to go outdoors, then consider the next exercise. Ask your child, if he can pick up water with his fingers. When he says no, take some water and put some color in it. Put the colored water in the refrigerator. After some time, when it has turned into the colored ice cube, ask him to pick it up. This will provoke a discussion about the different states of water. You could conduct many more interesting experiments that will fire up your child's imagination and encourage questions and conversation. It is well known that one has to struggle very hard at the beginning. A satellite-carrying rocket struggles, till it reaches escape velocity. One has to overcome inertia before things starts moving. So, keep at it and don't give up.

Observation: This can begin right at home. Ask your child to spend some time observing the family members, including you. The way they move, act and talk, while expressing themselves. Help him in comparing the behaviors of different personalities. Your kid will come to know that behavior differs from individual to individual. The time is ripe to find out why he does not open up and share his thoughts; what is holding him back from expressing himself.

Subject of the Speech: Help your kid write a speech. Pick an interesting topic or just go with the one that has to be dealt with. Discuss the subject with him. Explore it, in general. If you are taking notes for him, instead of putting your own views in the speech, prefer to jot down his ideas. Pay attention to and give preference to his use of words, sentence structure, if it is logical and suitable. Encourage him to take the lead in the discussion. Draw him out. Lend him an ear and listen to him speak. The battle is half won.le will help him get an idea of how to behave and talk in a group of people. It will also reassure him that other people will accept his behavior as normal.
